Masks and Wall Sculptures

Created during the Spring of 2015, this body of work was made in response to readings and lectures on: Anthropomorphism and the Religious Imagination in collaboration with Dr.Michael Jackson, Sutras from the Tripitaka with Professor Charles Hallisey, and  studies of Oracles and Seerers in Ancient Greece with Dr. Kimberley Patton,. The masks were used in a production of "Say the Name," a play by Judith Sherman  and in collaboration with Dr. David Carrasco on May 2nd, 2015 at Harvard University.
These pieces, from the series "Claims Reaching Far Beyond the Body"  are made from shattered glass that has been fused together. I used whatever materials were at hand- wine glasses, light bulbs, a vase. Many of the places where the glass has been joined to another shard are treated with gold leaf. There is a tradition in Japan of repairing broken religious icons in a unique way- rather hide the repair, as we do in the west, they honor it by emphasizing the joined place with gold leaf.
